Continuous exceeding of the reference value Employers must inform employees about measurement results, measures for radon protection and, if necessary, rules of conduct and repeat the dose assessment regularly

First of all, the company must have a dose assessment carried out for those employees who are present at workplaces where the reference value is exceeded even after structural measures. The dose assessment is carried out by an authorized monitoring body. As soon as the results of the dose assessment are available, you are obliged to report information on the radon measurement, the dose assessment and the measures taken to the competent authority. If necessary, you can explain in a statement why further optimization measures are unreasonable.

Dose estimation ≤ 6 millisieverts per year: further steps

If the dose assessment carried out has resulted in a value of no more than six millisieverts per year, the following obligations apply:

  • Verifiable information of the affected employees and retention of records thereof
  • Repeat dose assessments (based on new radon measurements) every five years

Proof that employees have been informed must be kept for seven years. This retention obligation also applies to all other documents created or transmitted in this context. Examples of such documents are reports from authorized monitoring bodies, documentation of measures carried out and codes of conduct drawn up.

The information provided to employees must include the following points:

  1. Information on exposure to radon and the associated health risks,
  2. Information on the results of the radon measurement at the workplace and the results of the employees' dose assessment,
  3. information on measures taken for radon protection and
  4. if necessary, rules of conduct for employees

Regarding point 1:

You can use this information sheet for the information according to point 1. General information on radon can be found on this website.

Point 2:

For the information according to point 2, you can refer to the test report that you received from the authorized monitoring body. This report contains the results of the radon measurements and the dose assessment for the employees in your company or business premises.

Point 3:

Informing your employees about the measures taken creates awareness of how best to avoid increased radon concentrations or a high radon dose at work. If necessary, information on the correct application of or compliance with measures is essential (e.g. in the case of active radon protection measures, such as the operation of fans or restrictions on working hours). Such measures can also lead to necessary rules of conduct for employees (see point 4).

Point 4:

Additional rules of conduct may be necessary in your company or business premises, which you must bring to the attention of your employees in a suitable form. The authorized monitoring body that carried out the dose assessment will support you in drawing up the necessary rules of conduct (e.g. on times of stay, access rules, operation of ventilation systems).

Please ensure that your employees are properly and sustainably informed. These rules of conduct serve to protect the health of employees in the workplace and should therefore be understood and followed in their own interest. You must keep proof of this information for at least seven years.

Dose estimation > 6 millisieverts per year: further steps

In rare cases, the dose assessment will show that the dose for at least one employee exceeds six millisieverts per year. Radiation protection measures are prescribed for these employees. These are primarily ongoing dose assessment by an authorized monitoring body and annual radiation protection training. The radiation protection authority can check compliance with the regulations in these companies.

In addition, a radon protection officer must be called in to advise and ensure that these measures are implemented. The function of the radon protection officer can be carried out either by a member of the company or by an external person. Here you will find a list of radon protection officers trained in accordance with the Radon Protection Ordinance.
