Information for employers Legal obligation to protect against radon in the workplace
Protection against radon in workplaces is regulated by the Radiation Protection Act and the Radon Protection Ordinance. Employers are therefore obliged to measure the radon concentration at certain workplaces. If the annual average radon concentration at the workplace is above the reference value of 300 becquerels per cubic meter, measures must be taken to protect the health of employees.
Radon is a radioactive noble gas and is produced by the radioactive decay of uranium in rocks and soil. Radon is invisible, odorless and tasteless. The noble gas can enter buildings with the soil air. Outdoors, radon is harmless to health, whereas it can accumulate in buildings and pose a health risk. Radon is one of the most important causes of lung cancer after smoking!
