Legal regulation of health protection against radon Radiation Protection Act and Radon Protection Ordinance
The Radiation Protection Act 2020 (StrSchG 2020), together with the Radon Protection Ord inance (RnV), ensures comprehensive protection against radon in homes and workplaces.
In particular, the Radon Protection Ordinance specifies
- the reference value of 300 becquerels per cubic meter (Bq/m³) for the radon concentration,
- the determination of the radon concentration in rooms in residential buildings and at the workplace,
- the areas in which radon measurements at workplaces are mandatory(radon protection areas),
- the exemptions from the obligation to measure radon in the workplace, and
- the areas in which radon precautionary measures must be taken in new buildings (radon precautionary areas).
Further information on Austrian radiation protection law can be found on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture.
National radon action plan
The Radon Action Plan serves as a basic guideline for radon protection in Austria.
The Radon Action Plan improves the coordination of Austria's existing radon protection activities. It sets out strategies for implementing new radon protection measures and improving existing ones.
The aim of the Radon Action Plan is to reduce the radon exposure of the population in Austria. The lung cancer rate caused by radon is to be reduced.
The Federal Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management (BMLUK) has to provide information on the main contents of the Radon Action Plan and the implementation strategies. To this end, an implementation plan with specific strategies up to the end of 2025 has been drawn up for the Radon Action Plan. Based on this, an annual status report and outlook for the next year will be prepared.
